The Archeological Sites of Serres
The Municipality of Serres is surrounded by high mountain groups, leaving a large plain in the middle, one of the largest in Greece. The river Strymon crosses this plain. This fertile and prosperous land attracted humans who came here and settled thousands of years ago. In Serres, numerous ancient cities are found; the most important, however, is Amphipolis, a colony of the Athenians. The region is recorded since the time of Herodotus, and according to historical references and archeologists, important cities such as Gazoro, Draviskos, Sirris, and many more, were situated here.
